The thing that I like about this piece is that it is personal, questioning, and still manages to inffuse the reader with thoughts of the world outside this little box we are all staring at. I love the imagery; "Morning warmed a spot of granite"--this brings me directly back to my youth. Lovely.

Your words shake me to my core as I feel the depth of your pain, the sorrow you have yet in your soul as you find that place where you are far too soon, brought there by an event you wanted not - the false ridge when you were waiting for the mountain top to emerge with golden sun and breezes of giddy joy. Oh, how the cold does seep in the bones, and mourning warms that spot of granite in a foreign place. We think we are okay, in the shelter, with warmth, and then it hits us that we are never away from it! The next moment of grief is waiting like a sly snake, but he is part of life, as grief is part of life. Yes, narrow is this path as we have only to go around another bend to find another pretend moment of happiness waiting for us.
Do we ever really get over it my friend????? I just don't think we do!!!
God, this is so good, so different, so heart wrenching, and I can relate to every word of it!!
And as I read of Pete Langley, he is into "rescue" of large animals, including horses....very interesting (if this is the Pete Langley you speak of)

Life takes us on many paths and we seek to find the destination without enjoying the journey and when it is too late we stand on ridges contemplating so many things that went right or wrong . Snakes are part of that desert path to find our oasis...Bravo on a splendid poem...:)
