Fractured

Fractured

A Poem by Costa Siwale
"

My cousin describes schizophrenia

"
Thoughts spill like black tar

twisting through a labyrinth
Fleeting joys,
ruinous ploys,

The mind dissolves in myth,

Shadows on the cornea

distort reality,

Whispers in the cochlea

taint my sanity.

Consciousness is a like curse,
a twisted hymn, a hollow verse

Carve my name in blood,
The only thing that's real.
Etch it till I bleed,
Then death can take its fill.

In Greek Mythology, Icarus's father was the creator of the labyrinth. The son made wings of feathers and wax. But when he flew too close to the Sun, the wax melted and he fell into the water and drowned.

I think this is a powerful and honest portrayal of what it must be like to live with schizophrenia. The language is rich and evocative and it conveys a sense of struggle and confusion. The lines about consciousness being a curse and carving your name in blood is wow.
