I See Myself Die

I see myself die
too often
in my mind’s eye.

A flash of light
a step too sleight,
down the stairs
I fell in flight.

A blaze alight
the fire burns bright
set too close
to a gas pipe.

A hasty fight
in the streets at night
ends with my complexion
turning pale white.

Why do I see myself die
so often
within my mind’s eye?
