To Fall

To Fall

A Poem by Consuela Burke

The last to fall in autumn
When smart leaves were long dead,
I curled my fists on wet cement
to supplicate my dread

I prayed for hotter sun
Or a heel to break my veins
And all around
the empty park
Wind shuffled my remains

How cold it had become!
Trees made of only splinters
Now I nourish needy soil

To pass the lifelong winters

Anthropomorphizing an autumn leaf is a very novel idea.
Enjoyed your cute poem and was enlightened by its amazing meaning.

"trees made of only splinters"

"wind shuffled my remains"

i like the idea of the smart leaves being long dead...they don't have to deal with life anymore...sometimes i think with the way the world is going..i'm not sure i want to be around so long...maybe like the leaves...be done be gone, not have to deal with how bad things have gotten and are going to get.

really intelligent writing here...and not just good but abstract enough to have different meanings for different readers...depending on what they bring to the poem.
