Pandemic

Pandemic

A Poem by Constance

A new global pandemic-- the infection: apathy

Mob-mentalitied multitudes never go against the grain

Common thought is tantamount to an absence of thought

But like tin soldiers, all stand at attention and fall in

None wish to be the note that halts the symphony

A man terrified of the smallest ounce of struggle, of pain

Can be swayed, can be paralyzed, can be sold and bought

Sometimes silence is clearly the gravest sin...

When one man finds the will to stop cooperating

The well oiled beaurocratic machine stops operating

And each man for himself is forced to think, to feel, to be

How could you feel that this would be a tragedy?

The most hallowed words on main street are: I BELONG

But is belonging something to be coveted or a fearsome plague?

Belonging to a family, to a lover, is beautiful, is healthy, is right...

Belonging to a false democracy, a prejudicial prophet, or a lie?

Why do we ever complain that everything has gone so wrong

When we have no voice, no stance, nothing but platitudes vague

But one's chances in battle depend on the weapons used to fight

At this rate, it will not even take decades for freedom to die!

When one man finds the will to rise and speak

He stands for the weary, the apathetic and meek

He forces all to re-evaluate their stance, their chance

To stop being the victims of circumstance.

If you would not be a victim, be a warrior

And fight with a sword, not a dirty spoon!

The cure for this pandemic? Pandemonium...

Followed by the desire for freedom, for peace

But the treatment must begin soon.

The colonials were patriots...patriot is another word anarchist. Courage is within all of us, but few of us will be courageous. Speak now people. Forget being "politically correct"...speak now. Our nation is on a one way course that leads to suppression of freedoms. Speak now. No party presents the correct path...just us. Speak now.

Very good write....I am privileged to have read it.
You are amazing.

You bring up some very good points and an interesting message here. Apathy seems
to have invaded this society creating a self-perpetuating feeling of ennui and self pity.
'Mob-mentalitied multitudes', I'm a sucker for alliteration, nicely done.
If noone believes things can change and be better then this cycle will continue.
I like the powerfull words at the end,
'The cure for this pandemic? Pandemonium....'
You gotta figure there is more of us than there are of them and all it
takes is one lil spark. It is hard to write a piece that is geared at getting
people thinking specifically on these levels and still being artistic but you do a
commendable job here. Nice write.
