IF

IF

A Poem by Mary Swingler
"

Out of the abundance of the heart, this writer speaks.

"

If

World governments would transcend

Then life on earth would amend

If

Every person tried to ameliorate

Then injustice they would alleviate

And words of comfort would be spoken

And words of encouragement would be a token

And the shroud of discouragement that causes depression would be lifted

If

Physicians were gifted

Then sickness and suffering they would eliminate

And death they could terminate

If

Abuse was ended

Then those mistreated would be tended

And tears and pain would be suspended

And life on earth would be splendid

If

Mankind had the desire, power and wisdom

Then a rectifier they would become

And all these wrongs would be overcome

If

Only that were true

' If - Mankind had the desire, power and wisdom.. .. '

'Language is made up of ifs and buts, bits and maybes...' or similar, said some bright spark. Here you've put that quote in a more serious place, framed it with both moral dilemma and optimism that just might happen - if only ' Mankind had the desire, power and wisdom.'

I enjoyed your poem. It's current and maybe always will be, until the second coming anyway.
I have said this many times but still have to repeat myself: I think poetry comes straight from the heart and is an expression of ones thoughts that cannot and should not be changed by the reader, only the author has that right. The rest of us take it for what it is. It's like a painting that the artist has put his feelings into to show to the world. Would we tell picaso to change an eye in his painting to suit oneself?
Your poem has a strong political message, it stirs the emotions and we can all relate to it because it tells of the world we live in. I think it is good and if I had the right to change something I wouldn't alter a word.
I like this because it is deep and understandable. Keep on writing.

What a great poem.
I think acknowledging the problems in the world is the only start to solving them.

Thank you for the insightful review of my work. I appreciate your encouragement.
It's a lovely poem.

If only we had those second chances, to mend to heal, but within all those experiences we get to truly grow, and sometimes in the darkness it is so hard to see the light, really it is, but as you know, the light is always there we just need to remember how to let it in.
