When a Poet Writes

When a Poet Writes

A Poem by Ivan Mauricio Urrego

When a poet writes

When a poet writes he takes a piece of himself

and idly fashiones it one day

and as his hand writes, still

a verse yields to his hearts’s will.

When a poet writes with his power and art,

A piece of soft thought and yielding heart,

With a touch of majesty and might

a  stanza grows like a blossoming night.

When a poet writes he may  hold sights like these;

a sunset flame over a saphire sea,

or golden hills rearing overland

with sunshine beams like spilled wine.

When a poet writes he may go through toil and ease

o matter, the result is a sweet melody,

His poems are like flowers, Violet, rose and lily,

diverse yet  still with beauty and sublimity.

And so Many true things they hold,

yet they can never straight be told.

So it is that when the poet’s poem has ended

a  soul may feel his heart mended.
