Inheritance

Inheritance

A Poem by L. Coffee

It is human nature to be greedy

To want and keep from the needy

To take and hide in a manner most speedy

The implanted emotion within is no different

In which through the narrow veins of our hearts it is sent

And allows even the strongest of wills to be bent

This is love’s rapid succession

With a mission that needs no new blood to freshen

The walls of our minds; to lessen

The grip that we hold on to with each dying session

Each acquaintance older and younger

And each of their lives that we relentlessly plunder

Into, to make sure we aren’t forgotten or kept a wonder

By the boundaries of age and interest; not unlike the way thunder

Is seamlessly the clouds swept under

Into the depths of a most forbidden company

The mind’s scenarios play out in a catastrophe

Your downfall accompanied

By your own heart’s symphony

Love is greed, love is loss

You are love’s inheritance
