Mask of LiesA Poem by Abri LopezWriting entry for a scholarship. Theme: Behind the CurtainOnce
upon a time, there was a little girl She was as pretty as a pearl Both her parents loved her a lot "Life is wonderful" Is what she thought She didn't understand why her daddy and brothers left home She wasn't use to being alone But mommy said, "It's for the best" And the little girl would protest Biggest brother had warned that evil was there It was all around, even if she were not aware It creeps and hides, waits and burns She didn't understand and did not learn Big brother had said in contrast "You can stop the evil with a mask Just smile and laugh and hide your tears Then there won't be anything to fear" Too young of age was she given this tool Because she didn't know yet how life could be cruel As she grew up the mask expanded Until it covered her body, not how she planned it It wasn't until she was the age of thirteen When the first crack had been seen She did all she could to cover the line And continued to say "I am fine" Until one day, she looked in the mirror And saw a face that was not familiar Eyes that were hollow and a smile that looked drawn on The person behind the mask was almost gone As she tried to pry it off she couldn't Why it hurt or why she started to bleed That's when it hit her, the poor foolish girl That a mask won't protect you from an all seeing world Day by day, piece by piece The mask came off and gave her release Her smile and laugh and her tears Finally became real after so many long years
