Sleep or SleeplessA Poem by George LoveThe confusion tha follows a all too realistic nightmare
Sleep or Sleepless
Sleep evades this dark night,
While fleeting glimpses float past my eyes,
Shapes of horror tales from long ago
Now in this dark night come full to life!
Whether goblins or ghosts or demons of night,
In fantasy and fable where all is make believe
Come horrors boundless and pain so cruel
Crashing through windows closed so tight
My heart races mightily as my breath now fails
Scream for help, or scream from terror
Matters not when your life is in peril!
Loudly the sounds enter my chamber,
I reach for my defense, yet it slithers away!
And chamber round after round I would discharge
Yet nothing they would hit for nothing is real!
Reality fades into nothingness as lives fail around me
I grasp for the straws to slow my descent!
Held fast by hands so gnarled in cruelty,
The pain they inflict is beyond their knowing
And far beyond their caring!
Dampened with mist I slowly now rise
Looking around me, the room so dark.
Did sleep take me under or did nightmares come true?
Life or death I dare not decide
Till morning’s light should waken the day.
