The Once and Forever Lost

The Once and Forever Lost

A Poem by George Love

The Once and Forever Lost

Two souls lost, shattered and broken
Trust all lost, nowhere to be found
Walls so strong they both now build
Insulating from pain
 Hiding from the world
That sore and broken heart.

Two hearts met, this condition sharing
Healing now started but far from complete
Facing fears, how can they overcome?
Are their hearts strong enough to be given again?
Or should the stay hidden
In that dark non-healing abyss?

This is where they stand
One heart broken and healing from within
Scars and sores clearly seen from without
The healing not complete, yet still venturous
So sensitive to pain
As cold upon the teeth.

The other heart broken not willing to heal
Yet longing for comfort, knowing now where to look
Willing to help was the one,
Yet undone by cruel fate
Of pure trust that heart
Struggles harshly against that cruel hate.

Both must heal from inside then out
For if the inner dare not heal
So soon pain might over take once more
And that is what both hearts now fear
That cruel pain of pain might again appear.

Willing to help is the one, yet rejected
As the heart doth not heal from outside at all
No having the strength nor will
The inside might not now, nor ever heal
One needing the other so desperate to feel
The love carried high that all could see.

Caring for one does help heal that outer shell
And caring to love does now move closer to trust
Yet cast aside and watch does he
As she dashes about so carelessly
Flitting from one to another and finds
More hurt that one hear could ever stand.

He pledged his heart to help hers heal,
Yet too late, too late, too late she bleeds
The walls did fall, but upon not the fear
But crash they did upon the heart so dear,
A world of friendship never to know
Drifts she into that dark, deep night.

He carries her now so light and pale
Places her body into his cart
And wipes away one caring tear.
Neath the bright flashes of night
All the night so still, so deafening to ear
Signs now the body to the morticians’ gate.

Should fate acted sooner this life might be
But never can fate be questioned nor life postponed.
Yet harmful deeds by others so scorned
Star crossed their paths would be lovers once
Brought them together as she breathed her last.
But yet that fear still held her fast.
Walls did not cause that heart to fail
Was one so cruel to beak that spirit
What was love the thing to fear?

love these lines. This is a line to be quoted. Pain can do so many things.. itcan be taken in as wisdom and spawn growth, or it can plant a seed of despair and destroy a person from inside out. It's all in how you choose to face it.. or not face it. Well said in a deep emotionally felt story of star-crossed lovers.

Emotional pain and scaring is a terrible thing..Interesting topic and presentation..I would be able to read it a little better if the print was larger..Sunflower

The insight you have shown is astounding as you have explored the multi-faceted aspects of love gained, love lost, vulnerability, hope, and the stark reality of one's heart midst turmoil, and past experience!
When we build the walls you speak of, we shut out the world and all that a new love may offer us. It often happens, but great is the joy when one breaks down the wall and learns to love again!
Am amazing write my friend!

All the sadness of lost love. This is a gentle journey into the pain of love. Its depth tells the story of struggle and hope. Nicely done!

' The choice to love is a game of chance; to never love is to lose the game without even trying it. ' I don't know who said that or words similar but, seems quite a sane way of looking at loving another person.

Your poem is so very sad: two people, both in pain, both destined to never recover - ' But never can fate be questioned nor life postponed. ' Then, you move onto their different reactions, the awful hurt they both experienced, different emotions, different reactions - ' He pledged his heart to help hers heal, Yet too late, too late, too late she bleeds The walls did fall, but upon not the fear But crash they did upon the heart so dear,' Further pain, her death and, this reader feels, emotions still remembered, regrets - who knows.

This is incredibly moving, a true poem about love, of never forgotten love - in spite of everything past.

Very nicely written, it hurts so much when your heart is broken, but love is always worth the risk of having it broken again. An enjoyable read. Thank you for sharing. Debileah

I believe it is the ones who let their hearts be broken who are the strong ones. Tissue is much stronger after it heals and leaves a scar.

Very nicely done.

This has an old world feel to it. It is full of depth while seeming to tell a sad story of a couple once in love. Yet, your words can be applied to all who read it. Excellent!
