Call From Home

Laura hated to call her brother, but she felt she really needed to let Kevin know that Stacy had been very upset and they had come home from school early. Marco’s flowers may have been intended to soften the girls’ attitude towards him, but the plan had backfired in a big way. Marco was public enemy number one in Stacy’s mind and Kimberly had him listed far lower on her list of respectable adults than ever before.
Kevin was surprised, but not angry about the flowers. He was angry that his child had been so upset by this. Stacy talked to her dad a few minutes and asked him to come home early if he could manage.
Laura told Kevin about the den and the cleaning they had been doing, but she did not mention the reasons they cleaned so well. Stacy had begged her not to tell him and as much as she really felt Kevin needed to know the whole truth behind Stacy’s behavior, she had honored her request.
The girls were going to handle the rest of the story when Kevin and Helen were home. Stacy talked to her sister at length about what the two girls saw that night and Kimberly finally began to understand the incident was indeed real. The thought of someone in her house that night was freakier to her than having a bad dream, and what made it even worse was the fact this man had harmed her mother and she had done nothing about it due to her own fears, much the same as Stacy held her story deep inside until the flowers forced the issue to surface.
