WorkdayA Chapter by George LoveKevin returns to work, unaware of the gift Marco sent his daughters
Workday
Kevin parked his new ride beside the reserve ambulance and tried to get inside before getting the third degree from Reggie. He was too late on that note.
“What did you do, rob a bank?” Reggie began. “That is some new ride!”
“It’s a peace offering from my father.”
“Hey, let me get him pissed at me for a couple of years”, Reggie teased. “I’d be happy with a new set of tires!”
“Something else is up. He left me a copy of his and Mom’s wills. I’m afraid one of them is very ill.”
“Maybe not. He’s what, 69 now?”
“Yeah, just last month.”
“There ya go, bud! He’s just feeling mortality around the corner. I wouldn’t worry about that none just yet. Don’t try to cloud a good thing with gloom and doom. I guess that means he has come to terms with the fact that you will never go to medical school?”
“Well, I think it does. Yesterday was a really nice day for us all. Say, speaking of future plans, when are you going to meet the folks?”
“That’s some time off, now”, Reggie defended. “Let’s not try to get old Reggie hooked in the harness before he can pull the wagon.”
“Still that money thing with you?”
“Well, that and I work as an EMT for her brother. She deserves more than I can give her on my pay and she needs a Paramedic, someone more her equal.”
“She needs someone who will take her dancing every weekend. Just like you do, you old two-stepper!”
“Hey now!” Reggie protested, “How did you find out about that?”
“I still have friends at “The Stable”. They say the two of you have been tearing up that floor every weekend for the past month!”
“That has to be Riana. She has been there every time we’ve been out.”
“Yeah, it was her. That girl still loves to hit that hardwood, doesn’t she?”
“That she does, but not nearly as much as your sister. Hey, you had breakfast yet? I could eat a horse.”
“You can always eat a horse”, Kevin protested. “I’ll go and have some coffee with you, but I fixed French toast for the girls and two of their friends this morning. I am stuffed.”
“Feel like doing some more for the crew?”
“Sure thing. We could have a breakfast shift meeting. Great idea Reg! Make the announcement while I get my stuff put away.”
“Oh my God! They are going to flip over that! It’s been a while since we tried to do a shift meeting on shift. Remember last time?”
“Yeah, I do. Alert Med’s primary transport got hit by a train and messed everything up for us. All the same, let’s give it a try.”
Kevin’s idea did indeed work and he took the opportunity to introduce Joyce to his shift as their new assistant supervisor. She was very embarrassed by the attention, but Kevin outlined their new tasks and everyone was pleased with the new arrangements.
“Now maybe we can find the stock room”, Mike had teased. That broke the mood wide open and Kevin had to try very hard to get the shifts attention after that.
“We also have some new courses coming up and a couple of medical standbys with the chopper in downtown Houston this coming weekend. I’ll take the chopper assignment and I need five more to fill this detail. I need one more on the chopper and four for the ground units.”
“I’ll take the chopper with you” Joyce volunteered.
“Suck up!!!” someone jeered.
“Oh stuff it” Joyce answered back.
The whole shift was having too much fun with the new girl on the block, but Reggie, Mike, Marie and Randy took the remaining ground unit assignments.
“What are we doing downtown?” Reggie asked.
“Standby for a television promotion of some sort” Kevin answered. “They are keeping it pretty secret, so it could be anything. Our sheet just gives location, not even which station is doing it.”
