It was only just ahead

Not that far, only a few paces

Just when he became tired and rested

For fear, he might fail the race

 

Seeing it so brightly there

Gaining ground quickly, quickly

Brighter now seems it shine

Still the pace, the pace only fair

 

A time for one to rise above

All below that held his love

Into the tunnel headlong into fray

Now closer, now closer, closer today

 

Agony deep within his chest

He knows he has tried his best

And deeply within his heart still aches

As one who knows the heart could break

 

No more rest, lest one more test

Worthy winner, he know tis he!

And forth he makes his feet trod on

Into that tunnel and death to dawn!

 

Light so fair and light unfair

Calls him on to enter.

Finished his course, now his race

Meeting his Maker, now face to face.
