One of 6000

One of 6000

A Poem by George Love
"

Six Thousand Teen Age Drivers a year lose their lives in car accidents in the United States.

"

One of 6000

Leaving for bliss or leaving for toil
Following that flattened path of soil
Many return from journeys such
But even one loss seems too much

What fate will touch on ones you love?
What call may come as from above?
Will you have one returning soon,
Or will they be too early entombed?

We see on print, we see on screen,
Streets so cold and roads so mean,
Lights flash and the sirens scream
As if to chase away that untimely fate.

Arriving too late, for the cards played out
As one of six thousand without a shout
Goes out of this world and on above
Into the hands of the ultimate love

Lest we forget, a cross may mark
That last breath taken of some parents’ child.
Silent remembrance of a life grown cold,
Lest we forget as memories grow old.

Thousand upon thousands may leave today,
And at the end, most may stay.
Six thousand souls to never return,
To hear the words so soft yet stern.

This is for one, this is for all
Yet we know the number one seems small,
Shall that one saved today
Be the child you watched at play?

So much harder when they are still children.

I like the use of mid-line rhyme across stanza gaps - much / touch - late / fate
