The Real Thing

The Real Thing

A Poem by Cassidy McIntosh

The Real Thing

For once I don’t feel afraid or confused
For once I’m not second guessing myself.
The Real Thing

Every time before
My head and my heart didn’t agree.
I was always waiting for the shoe to drop
Thinking secretly to myself “I love them
But
I’m not sure they feel the same way.”
I didn’t trust them not to hurt me.
I was waiting for the pain that went
With every relationship.

Now is different.
My head and heart finally agree.
I’m not holding my breath, waiting
For the other shoe to drop.
I’m not waiting for the pain.
Even though some aspects of my life
Are out of whack, I’ve never felt
More at peace.
I’ve never felt true love before.

Someone who still gives me butterflies.
Someone who makes my heart beat faster
With just a thought.
You are truly the man of my dreams.
I love you.

Oh what a wonderful experience to have reached this pinnacle, and what a grand way you've let us see the years and the "other shoes" that lead up to the real thing of butterflies. Your final couplet is therefore all the more expressive and makes me, for one, catch my breath in its declaration even as I catch a hint -- perhaps? -- of vulnerability.

Well done!
