The Someone Else

The Someone Else

A Poem by Claire McCracken
"

What happens when two become three...

"

When we're all in the same room
She sits like a mouse
Growing to ten times the size
When I'm not around.
You tell me goodbye
Then I find her in the house
She's a tempting octopus
Wrapping herself round

All that I treasure
and hold most dear
I had to work
For what she effortlessly gains
She's silent when we're all there
Silencing my fears
Til the second I go
When she snatches the reigns

Of course I believe you!
I cling tight to your words
Smiling all the time
Like some mad, lover's fool
My insecurity now
Seems wildly absurd
Until her voice leads my fingers
To find the wool

That she's told you to help her
To wind round my eyes
Every time to the places we went
You've both run
And your promises
Bear resemblance to lies
Even if I refuse to lose
She's still won

I can't alert you
To the danger she presents
Without her noticing
And, as a vampire,
With one bite
Turning my warning to nonsense
And someone you loved
Into a jealous liar
