The Winter SceneA Poem by Miles ColellaA poem depicting a winter scene and the effects of winter on the earth and the soul. The storm is coming, but let it come Let the snow cover everything Lands will be buried in white powder Nothing will escape winter’s grim assault Trees covered in snow, bent and broken Yet they continue to stand and fight Against the pain, and grow still Despite the weather’s persistence to destroy The sky is heavy, violent shades of blue A deep fog sets over an open field Tall street lamps illuminate the darkest scene Casting a cage of shadows to lock you in A frozen pond in the dead of winter Life lies beneath, waiting for spring Birds leave home, and fly south Leaving nests unguarded, abandoned children A lone man croons at the blackest hour Snowflakes dance on his withered body They fall on his tongue, cold and wet Layers of frost bite his pale, wrinkled skin The moon is almost full, a pure white Surrounded by patterns of scattered grays Among the yellow grass lies blocks of snow Survival is thin, the orange sun kills slowly The earth is reborn as spring arrives And the sins of winter have been forgotten Fresh fields are filled with golden promises And second chances, new beginnings But seasons change, and spring will not last Winter will come back to tear it all down © 2010 Miles ColellaAuthor's Note
