4. conscience comes alive

4. conscience comes alive

A Chapter by Jordan Williams

animals have it easy, not just because they're so darn cute

i've had a lion's share

of problems unfair

since i made vows in a penguin suit

we were thought of as a good couple, quite the complimentary pair

she was sweet like honey

cute as a bunny

and i a grumpy old bear

when she spoke i'd listen, her voice was like a bird's

when she'd fly away

i'd try and chase

hanging onto every word

animals have it better, not just because they're cuddly

they're just sweet pets

they've no regrets

like the kind that trouble me

i weaseled my way into a conversation with her

then she wormed her way

in my heart to stay

all i can do now is endure

she crept up to me like a sly fox or cat

i did resist

but she wouldn't quit

determination brought her back

she spun a trap for me, and i gave in like a bug

circling the drain

in a toilet stained

life just one long big flush

she pleaded for a promise so i made one with a ring

she was a butterfly

that fluttered by

now a b that likes to sting

i should've been a stubborn mule or strong like a bull

and put my hoof down

but i look now

and see that i'm a fool

animals have it nicer, though some are stuck in a zoo

forced to pose

for family photos

just like i have to

god gave man reason, a reason to complain

to stretch and bend

the truth to whims

concocted by the brain

animals also deceive, but only to survive

but since we are

feelings at heart

our conscience comes alive

she's citing lovesick confessions that could not be cheesier

making my ears burn

and my stomach turn

exponentially queasier

now i respond ever so measlier

"i love you too"

oh, what to do?

animals have it easier

I like how you used animals to explain human behaviour. Very smart especially the penguin and bull bits.
