Writer's Block

Writer's Block

A Poem by clairvoyantmars

My mind’s at a blank

I want to write but I can’t

Whether with a pen in my hand

Or my fingers positioned above the keyboard

The words don’t come

I close my eyes for inspiration

Or read something for motivation

Or head outside for stimulation

But the paper lays bare

A few phrases now and then

Only to be erased in the end

Then when I least expect it

Like when I’m ironing my shirt

Or singing in the shower

I get something

A small sliver of an idea

I ponder on it more

And soon it leads to more questions

And the idea expands

It leads me to my plot

And soon enough the thought’s there

I’ve grasped it

I grab for the nearest piece of paper at hand

And scribble this small idea I have

The words flow out at a gentle pace

Going and going till it leads to the end

At last!

There’s my piece and my mind’s exhausted

But my hand still wants to flow

And a stirring lingers at the back of my mind

What do I write next?

Soon enough I’m back to the start.

My mind’s at a blank

I want to write but I can’t

Yup Yup Yup!!! I know this person! It's me! And many other writers...
Your explanation is spot on and really engaging.. the whole way through I was like, yeah, this really happens.

I close my eyes for inspiration
Or read something for motivation
Or head outside for stimulation

There’s my piece and my mind’s exhausted
But my hand still wants to flow

Love it! Both these groups of lines are really effective and stand out in the piece. And the repetition in the opening and ending of the poem really winds it up.. and creates a vicious circle.
thank you so much for sharing a reminder to let me know I am not the only one.. And this happens to all writers... (most) - thought admittedly I am quite fussy as to what I write about - None the less - good riddance writers block!

Ugh, do I know the feeling. I always seem to come up with ideas at the most terrible times, like when I'm in the shower or busy doing something else, like you said in the 13th and 14th lines. Then I have to keep thinking about it or I'll forget the idea. That's usually when I come up with drawing ideas, too, but I obviously can't take care of it at that moment.
Writer's block is annoying. I hate not being able to write about something, or really, anything. But, hey! You got something out of it! And it was good. :3 I like that you repeated those first two lines in the end. It kind of brings closure to the poem, but it also starts all over again. It's like the poem could go on forever (but hopefully by then you'd have an idea, right?).
Well, good job. :)

I carrry a notebook and pen at all times as we all get blocked but often a thought or an idea jotted down can be built into something beautiful..loved this one..so truthful..Kathie

writing's joy is through surprising inspiration; the fun tends to melt when we force ourselves to spill; its equivalent to wanting to vomit when the stomach is empty.

Oh my gosh I love this one so much. I just read it to my sister and this may be the only poem I've read to her on this site that she really likes. Fantastic job!

I love this! It's so true, when you want to write you can;t think of anything, ideas just come at random. :)

Ah, something we can all definitely relate to experiencing on a rather regular basis :)

Yes, it does seem like the more you seek it, the more it gets away from you. That's where the all-important pocket notebook comes in. Well put.
