A Story by Claire Downey

these are two different things

Sometimes when I hear the song,”strange fruit”,’ I think of my great-grandmother. She’d always ask if I’d play it for her, and of course, I did. It pains me to say that there’s not much else I can remember about her. It’s been so long sometimes I don’t even think  of her as often as I used to. I can’t even remember how to get to my daughter’s house. I remember that happening to my grandmother, come to think of it. She once got lost going to the corner store and my mother had to walk down and get her. I haven’t seen my mother in so long, even before she passed. It had been a while. I forget what she looks like. Trying to remember always makes me tear up. I get this heavy heart and my whole body aches just trying to remember what my grandfather’s face looked like. I’d give anything to go back. Well, today’s soup at the home is New England clam chowder.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I have it all. My dad paid for my new car, my new phone, my new everything. He is now paying for my college education and apartment here in Paris. He sends me money every month, as he says it’s too dangerous for me to work. I understand, some of the kids I go to school with really look trashy in their cheap jeans, plus they all have bags under their eyes from working all night. Sometimes I wish that were me, though. I’d love to just be normal. Everybody always tell me how I’m so lucky to have so much, but yet here I am, standing on the edge of this building ready to jump, just like my mom did 10 years ago.

Hi, which creative class do you attend? I saw in your bio, just curious as I'm looking to enroll somewhere cheap hahaha. Cheap, is the key word here! Anyway, I like the challenges, or prompts, that you're given to write about. Being a writer, whether published or unpublished in this sense, means to be able to write about anything, and making it interesting. That's a challenge. Keep it up. Oh, and try coming up with the worst titles and plots you can think of in the world, it's fun, and strangely it teaches you what NOT to write about. I recently entered a competition for that, not sure who won just yet or till when it runs, but I learnt a lot from reading the other plot lines as well as constructing my own. Just food for thought. As for your writing, you admit you're not the best, though I think we all feel that way, I certainly do - more often than not I HATE my own writing. But with more practice you'll get better. And, by the way, I'm NOT saying you're a bad writer. Just that you are in the process of honing your skills, which you have. I like what you said in your author's note: I believe that if you don't write for yourself you're doing it for the wrong purpose and it's to no avail.Keep writing, looking forward to seeing more of these prompts. Maybe I'll use a few just to challenge myself :)
