White Elephant

White Elephant

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

Your arms around me

Are a gift

And a curse

Your breath

On my cheek

Is all that keeps me from screaming

But your breath

On my cheek

Is the reason the scream is building

Can’t you see what you’re doing to me?

I can’t believe this is real

Because your lips

On mine

Must be a dream

(And a nightmare)

But I can’t afford this

Can’t afford

What you want in return

Can’t you see what we’re doing to us?

Your body next to mine

Is a blessing

I don’t deserve

But it’s a punishment

I can’t see I’ve earned

Because your lips

And your breath

And your hands

And your heart

And your body next to mine

Are holding me together

And tearing me apart

A gift I can’t afford

A curse i can't be without
