I am an Advocate.A Poem by Chong N. KimI am an
ADVOCATE. There are so
many things we can learn from one another, If we only
just sit and listen for a moment, Could you
please stop talking over me and assume I’m
an ignorant victim? Grant it, I may not be
in accounting, But I can tell
you how counterfeit works. I may not be
an attorney, But you’d be
surprised how well I know my rights. I’ve already
got a bible law book on my side. I may not be
a social worker/psychologist, But I do
know what works for me and what may work For my
fellow brothers and sisters in the streets. I may not be
a teacher, But there’s
a lot about history I learned While spending
my time in the library Just to
educate myself. You see I am
far from being a victim, But what
would you know about that? If you only
took the time to ask me what I have learned Instead of
what has been happening to me and steady yourself Trying to
fix me. I’ve already
come to terms with who I am, What I do
and who I fight for doesn’t even come close to the label “Victim”. You see I am
an over-comer, A go-getter
and a fighter. I am an
advocate, Who will
live out my days FIGHTING for
justice and peace For my
fellow brothers and sisters, So we are no
longer the OPPRESSED. So, are you
ready to take my hand and LET me teach
you something or Do you want
to leave an invisible wall And just
consider me a “Nobody”? What do you
chose? © Chong N.
