My UnderworldA Poem by Chong N. KimHuman trafficking, the aftermath . . .
My Underworld
I want to show you my world,
The darkest place
That lives within me.
The pain that recants in my soul.
Would you beg to escape?
Could you handle the agony?
That has lain before me?
Would you set my soul free?
Seeing me trapped in my own enslavement?
The painful screams that recounts my tears.
Through my eyes,
They shed with blood.
And my heart lays heavy,
Waiting to claim its death.
Sounds of the shotgun,
Followed by a child’s cry
My head hurts can you make this stop!
It’s dark and weary,
I just hear the sound of water dripping
From a tunnel afar.
Even though I sit here with you,
Drinking my coffee and laughing away,
But what you don’t see,
I’m split in two.
Apart of me is reaching out,
Begging to escape the animal that beholds me.
The other part of me
Relives the nightmare
I’ve been longing to elude
When you ask me to share my story,
Just to feel closer to my pain
I can only describe in limited details
You can only imagine the horror,
Your perception of me,
Will always change,
In your eyes,
I’m either strong or debilitated
You pity for me
Your mercy I do not ask
Just your participation
Take a glimpse of the world I am forced to live.
The voices, the screams,
The visions of brutality
Recants in my mind,
Until my body becomes numb.
You turn around,
I stand there behind bars,
I am chained to these walls
That keeps my body underground
Even if you are invited,
You are welcome to come and go as you please
As I am left behind
In the underworld.
