I AmA Poem by Chong N. Kim
I AM
I may be petite,
But my compassion expands.
I am no soldier,
But my battles are real.
I may not have,
Trophies hanging on my wall,
But the things I went through,
Only one can imagine.
Who I was then,
And who I am now,
Shall bear no difference.
I’ve only shifted the gears,
In how I chose to survive.
If you sit and listen
To the tone of my voice,
You will hear my story
In the triumphs I’ve succeeded
Don’t judge me,
From where I’ve been.
Embrace me,
With the conquest I’ve established
I use music as my outlet
For the anger that brews in me.
I use poetry to share
The very sacred part of me.
Survivor will reflect
Back into your eyes,
As you look into mine.
My tears will explain the pain.
All I ask is for you to listen,
And I will tell you my name.
I may not have my own entourage,
But I humble myself to those in need.
In my family
There’s no perfection.
My siblings,
They’ve taught me,
About Hope.
My children,
Will seek me as their hero.
I’m not looking for fame
To buy my way through happiness,
Cause corruption,
I attain through my own enslavement.
I’m not a woman,
On the cover of a magazine.
I’m real as they come.
I’m a woman,
Not because I have to be,
But I’m proud to be one.
I’m looking for my best friend,
Someone who won’t judge me,
For the person I created,
And will cherish the person matured to.
I can teach you things,
I’ve attained,
You can show me things,
I’ve only dreamed about.
Who am I?
You ask?
Gaze deep into my eyes
For I am a . . .
Survivor.
