Empty Space

Empty Space

A Poem by Chong N. Kim

EMPTY SPACE

When I become afraid,
I curl up and hide.
In a room where I find
That empty space.

A place where I can
Shed my tears.

I close my eyes,
Then I pretend
That I’m somewhere
Else besides here.

When I am hurt,
And someone has
Wounded me.

I crawl away,
Trying to find
That little room
Deep inside me.

An empty space,
Where I can heal.

My home,
Where I should not
Be afraid.

When I’ve been knocked down
All the way
To the ground.

I make a wish,
That I can erase
Where I am right now.

And just be in that
Little place.
That empty space.

An opportunity,
For me to stand,
To show myself,
That I’m not afraid.

Where is that little place,
That I’ve been searching for.

I know it’s here,
Cause I’ve seen it before.

It held my tears,
My pain,
My laughter,
And my strength.

It is where I go
To find my inner peace.

My heart,
That empty space,
No one knew about,
I found it in me
That I could be my own
Hero.
