DisabledA Poem by Chong N. KimAs our parents have hopes for us to be flawless even in our physical tone, we can't be perfect.
Disabled
In your eyes,
You wish I could be like them.
In your heart,
You hoped I was normal
But you believe,
I have failed you as a daughter.
I couldn’t make the grades,
So you labeled me “stupid”.
My bones were debilitated,
Yet you sold me to top surgeons
To hide your insecurities
I’m the oldest,
Expected to care for the family,
Yet putting aside my pride was considered
An “Honor”.
Which I have done,
Yet your ignorance was too blind to see it.
I see the way you look at me,
The very eyes that scream out “I wish”
The only wish I always wanted
Was for you to accept “me”.
I am disabled,
And to you it means “Failure”.
