Breaking Free

Breaking Free

A Poem by Chong N. Kim
"

Emotional Abuse can be just as deadly as the physical ones.

"

Breaking Free . . .

You came to me at my despair,
Your cruel intentions I didn’t see.
Assuming you would be my hero
Years went on and apart of me
Felt something so wrong.

Without the beatings,
I denied there was abuse.
Held on to my shattered soul
Hoped you would learn to love me.

Accepted my life as your slave
How content that must’ve been.
Fell on my knees begged for affection,
Made me feel empty inside,
You called me the fool.

Anniversary night,
I can’t forget . . .
You bruised my heart without remorse,
Walked out from my arms,
Yet I tried to make you stay
And see how pitiful this woman I was.

Since you’ve been gone,
I’ve learned about myself.
Since you walked out on me
I realized it was you that lost not me.
Without your arms,
I broke the chains of domestic violence.

When I surrounded my thoughts of guilt,
Denying that I let you damage my body,
Through time, I realized my body
Was never broken.
You thought you had me,
But it was my dead soul.

Now here we are standing face to face,
You tell me you still want me,
Just the thought of you,
I feel so nauseous inside.

Do you think I would allow
You to burn me again?

I have finally found peace,
Without your presence.
I feel so free,
Away from your prison cell.

I’m here to tell you that it’s over,
I refuse to let you control me.
No more pretending,
No more lying to myself
That maybe we could be friends.

I’m moving on,
Finally without you in it.
