The Fallen City Stands

The Fallen City Stands

A Poem by Kaden Elias Sylvers
"

About that destroyed place somewhere on the way to Texas...

"

None of that is solid land
Twisted, lonely tree
Abandoned by its' branches and leaves
Headed to a city
Permanently below sea level
But no one is drowning
Anymore
Disaster forces life to shift
Broken faces clinging to tattered clothes
Rescind with the horizon
As a new day spreads its wings
Resilience is a beautiful thing
Jaded eyes stare at the water and
See only black skeletons
And burnt broken houses, jagged red roofs,
But new eyes see twisted trees
Skinny trees, weird shaped trees
Still standing
The eagle bites his beak and continues to
Soar across his melted sky
Ashen faces evaporate
The ghosts do not remain grim
Today
Their ancestors are watching
As they stand up
Faces laden with almost-smiles
The traffic moves on
Glaring
Into city lights.
