The Mountain, You and I

The Mountain, You and I

A Poem by N. Hadley

I dreamt last night,
I was carrying you down
a mountain on my back

you clung to me like
a child playing piggyback

you told me how you missed
me and how you wished things
turned out differently

you said someday soon we
will drift back

into each other's lives and
forget what separated
us in the first place

you said it as if
it were a fact

as if you were absolutely,
beyond a shadow of a
doubt, certain that
it will happen

you were optimistic as
always, that's one of
the things I admired most
about you

I woke up this morning
wanting to tell you the
same exact things
you told me in my dream

but the I was silenced
by shards of glass
stuck in my throat

I was never the optimist,
you were
