I remember reading Robert Maupin's, (Iceberg Slim's ) lush accounts of an urban mosaic (did I say that nice enough) when I was growing up in Detroit. When I read it, just like when I read this, it pushes
me against the wall of my room. And at first all emotions come on you at once, including but
not allowing, outrage. I think that is the fascination. It was in Slim's days and it is now. But Black
America is slower to literature now then they've ever been. They lag behind in access to books
(and thus knowledge) from middle school until late adulthood. The corner stores use to at least
carry an EBONY OR JET behind the double glass, but even that has faded into a netherworld of
profit and currency. So this is clearly intended for a targeted audience (me and perhaps a few
others around here) so the story becomes too abstract to believe.

What i'm telling you is that I love it. I hear it. I connect with it. It is what I hear everyday
and what I've come to call life in the city that I occupy. And for those reasons it is beautiful.
But it is still literature and being that, few if any Black folk will connect with it. Sex and drugs
sale. It always have and always will. You just have to refine the story...Make the characters
larger and thus more believable. Make their conditions plausible and their mistakes doable.
Then it becomes a story of truth and not just a story of pain.

I cant wait to read chapter 3. What kind of woman was Kandy? Did she like movies or shell fish or
just like getting fucked? Character development is always important. Great story...dana
