It Was the Norm

It Was the Norm

A Story by Christine Peters

Things we look back upon that might make us angry today.,

Occasions where we would be powerfully against now for our children.

How we wish we could go back in time and strongly fight against those wrongs..,

But for us., it is too late for back then.,

It was the 'Norm'.

At that time, we all accepted it as the 'Norm' so saw no reason to argue against it,

Least of all, tell our parents for it was all.,

'The Norm'.

Back in time we publicly hung people for stealing a loaf of bread - even for young children.

It was the 'Norm'.

We executed young soldiers for what we now understand as battle fatigue or worse. We called them all cowards back then and put them against the wall.

It was the 'Norm'.

We made homosexuality, suicide, abortion and even standing up for one's right a crime. The bad treatment of Blacks.

It was all, the 'Norm'.

What is happening today that we now accept as the 'Norm',

But will future generations clearly see it as not so?

Should we feel bad or bitter about what occurred during our past.,

Or should we just accept it,

As the 'Norm'?
