How Old You Gotta Be

How Old You Gotta Be

A Poem by Christine Peters

How old you gotta be before you can say 'No' to adults?

How old you gotta be before you wished you'd done it?

Editors note:

The thought behind this (poem or not), was a memory of my late mother born in 1920.

I feel sure many of you have seen the film 'Magdalene' which depicted harsh treatment on young children via the Irish Catholic Monastery. My own mother suffered that.

After viewing the film, I vehemently asked my mother 'Why did you put up with that?'

She replied, 'It all seemed so normal at the time!'

I too can say the very same about my own childhood. As a child I put up with so much harsh treatment at school from supposedly responsible adults. As a child we had no say. Everything, as my mother said, seemed so normal.

If I could only go back in time with my mindset today – surely I would so 'party'.

But I cannot. Those times are long gone though lay so dormant within my lifetime memory.

Hence, my words above.
