Fallen Chapter NineteenA Story by Chistie
Chapter Nineteen
The familiar sensation thrilled down my arm, burning my arm and fingertips. The power of my bolt sent me flailing backwards. Marcus rushed to my aid and caught me as I crashed to the floor. We landed in a heap of entangled arms and legs.
“Ow, what!” I was in pain; my legs had landed on the bottom of our heap and slammed in to the floor.
“Ow, are you okay Kennley?” Marcus still had his arms wrapped around my waist.
“No, my leg is killing me. You may not look like it but you weigh a lot.” I was trying to disentangle my legs from his.
“Oh, sorry.” He slowly removed his legs from mine and helped me stand up.
“Thank you. What happened, why did the bolt throw me like that?”
“Um, I think you may be a little too powerful. We need to work on self control, so you don’t use so much power next time.” He glanced at the dummy and almost doubled over in spasms.
I followed his gaze and threw my head back in laughter. The dummy was gone; all that was left was the pole it was hanging on and flying stuffing and feathers. My room looked like it had been the site of the pillow fighting championships.
We were interrupted by a knock on my door. Colby did not wait for me to say come in but just walked in. She took one look around and joined in our laughter.
“Self control would seem like a good next lesson, Marcus.” She picked her way through the mess to stand in front of us.
“Now I was going to come to talk to you about what happened yesterday but Cooper came to me this morning and asked that I not yell,” she glanced at me and finished with, “too much anyways.”
I gulped and started to say that I was sorry but Colby held up her hand.
“I decided that almost dieing was a good enough lesson, for all of you, so I won’t be yelling today but just remember how close it came to. Cooper may be strong but he has no powers and Dixon is extremely out of practice.” She looked up at the ceiling and tapped her forefinger on her chin.
“In fact I feel that we all are. We are going to have daily training sessions, to keep in shape. Tomorrow starting at noon, we will be meeting in the backyard. You, Kennley, will continue your one on one with Marcus before and after each of these sessions. Okay?”
“Yes ma’am.” I bowed my head slightly to show her respect. She deserved it and I felt even worse for disobeying her, she just wanted what was best for everyone.
“Maybe for today you can rest, seeing as you have already created a bolt, a very strong one at that. Good job, to you as well Marcus, she is progressing wonderfully.”
“Thank you Colby but I really just told her to relax and she did the rest.” He and I both blushed at the compliment and looked away from each other.
“Okay then, I have some things to do so I will be out of the house for a while, please try not to destroy it.” She gave me a pointed look and I giggled a little under my breath and watched her walk towards the door.
“Wait, when will Cooper be back?” I had just remembered that she had sent him on some errand.
“Cooper should arrive tomorrow, very early in the morning. I sent him to New York to talk to a contact that had some information.” She finished as she walked from the room, closing the door behind her.
“Do you want to stop or should I teach you how to clean up?”
“Um, let’s clean up. My room is trashed.” I looked around in playful disgust.
“Okay, so all you have to do is picture the room clean.” He said casually like that was nothing at all.
“Where does it go? The feathers and stuffing I mean. Where does all the trash go?” I had been wondering about this for a while but just assumed it would come up.
“It just goes. There is really no certain place it goes, it just does.” He seemed to struggle with the answer; it seems he really did not know where it went.
I giggled as I pictured some house just filling up with garbage and anything else that we just clap away. Shaking the image from my head, I pictured the room clean, no more feathers, no more stuffing, and the pole and the burnt mark on the wall behind the dummy pole that I had not noticed before. I held the image in my head and opened my eyes.
I started to clap my hands when Marcus touched my hands, shaking his head no.
“For this kind of thing you have to snap.” He snapped his fingers together for my observation.
“Okay, why?” I looked at him confused, why couldn’t I just clap like everything else?
“Because you want something to disappear that you did not make appear. When you clap something here you can clap it gone but if you want something that was already here, that is when you snap.” He snapped again.
“Okay, whatever.” I was more confused then ever but he was the teacher so I snapped.
I felt a strange mixture of cold and hot touch my limbs. Starting burning hot in my upper arms but going to ice cold at my hands and fingertips, I shivered as the sensation did not fade away. I looked around amazed that my room was spotless. No feathers, stuffing, pole or burnt mark, just perfect.
“Good job Kennley. Oh and the sensation will fade, just shake your hands.”
I shook my hands and the feeling did fade. Confused I asked Marcus, “Why the weird sensations? I mean I know it’s from the power flowing through me but why when I made the stuff disappear was the feeling cold?”
“It’s because it takes more power to pull something to you then to make it disappear. The hot and cold will go away as you gain more control, I mean not completely but they will dull.”
“That’s good, I do not think I could get used to the ice, it felt like I just shoved my hands in to an ice bucket and left them there. The burn isn’t that bad, I could get used to that.”
“Good job for today. I am going to go get cleaned up for dinner. I will see you there.” He captain saluted me and strode out of my room.
Dinner? Was it really that late? I looked over at the clock and saw that yes it really was time for dinner. Shaking my head in amazement, I headed for the door.
Walking down the grand stairs, I wondered where Cooper would be eating dinner tonight. I hope he is okay and not in any trouble. I was snapped out of my revere with a bump from Toshia on her way down the stairs. Her and Alorha giggled and continued on their way down without stopping to apologize. I felt like snapping them into nowhere but stopped myself remembering my promise to Cooper.
I sat next to Albert as usual, hearing talking from the other room. I remembered the second day I was here, I had asked about the other Watchers.
“They all live here. They do not eat or come to the common areas of the house. They need to stay out of the way, and out of sight. We, the Watchers, are not to be identified or we could put our Stars in danger.”
Cooper was the exception; he always had dinner with us. Cooper had said that they stayed out of the way but they really did not. I was constantly bumping in to the other Watchers on the stairs or in the kitchen. That seemed to be their favorite hang out spot. I also noticed that the Watchers also had an equal man to woman ratio. Cooper had told me that each woman Star had a male Watcher and each male Star had a women Watcher. He told me that he did not know why this was it just was.
Dinner went by in a flash and I soon found myself in my bed snuggled up with one of Cooper’s blankets that I had stole from his room. His smell was still on it and it helped me fall asleep. I dreamed of Cooper and nothing else which I was happy for. I awoke thinking of nothing but Cooper expecting to feel him next to me. When I did not find him with my fingers, I opened my eyes. Still not finding him, I got up and ran down the stairs to his room. He was not in there either. Panicking, picturing the worst, I raced down the stairs towards the kitchen, sure to find a Watcher in there. As I rounded the corner in to the kitchen, my fears were confirmed. The Watchers were all there talking in whispers, some angry some resigned. I screamed and fell to my knees.
“NO!” I screamed shaking my head back and forth in denial. Cooper could not be dead he just could not be.
“Kennley, he’s not dead.” Colby was shaking my shoulders trying to calm me down.
“Cooper is not dead, at least not yet. He is just missing.” Her voice was thick with concern but her face was hard and calm.
“Nicolai has taken him.”
