Fallen Chapter SeventeenA Story by Chistie
Chapter Seventeen
Not wanting to lead Nicolai to the manor, everyone took separate routes. Since I obviously could not use my powers to protect myself, I was partnered with Marcus, Cooper with Cassidy, Colby with Dixon and Albert and of course Alorha and Toshia.
Marcus and I had the longest route back to the house; we would not arrive there until almost an hour after everyone else.
We walked in uncomfortable silence for a while until it became too much for Marcus.
“What happened with the Light Kennley? How do you know the Light’s real name?” He narrowed his eyes at me, waiting for my excuse.
“I really don’t remember Marcus but I feel like something is wrong, as if I don’t belong here.” I started to sniffle, tears threatening to race down my cheeks again.
“Okay, I believe you but Colby won’t. She is really mad that we snuck you out, she is going to ream you and everyone involved a new one with ‘I told you so and how could you let this happen’.” He shuttered at the thought, automatically slowing down.
“I know but it wasn’t our fault, everything was going fine.” I was suddenly furious at the Light, how could he ruin this for me? “I mean why now, what happened to make him seek me, I mean, us out?”
“I don’t know but it is not good. We have been here for a long time and never has the Light attacked us like that.”
We walked along in silence again, contemplating the reasons for the Light’s strange behavior. Going over the details of what had just happened I remembered Marcus’s weird hug.
“Why did you hug me? I mean when you came tonight, why the hug?” Cooper would be asking the same question but I was pretty sure Marcus would give Cooper another excuse.
“Oh, um, well I, um,” It was the first time I have ever heard Marcus struggle for words it was somewhat funny.
“Well Marcus, I mean I know you saw Cooper, knew how he would react. Why did you hug me?” Now I was teasing him, purposefully making him uncomfortable for my own amusement.
“Well I was just happy you were okay. I mean I know Cooper and Dixon can handle themselves but Kennley, you are really skinny and you don’t have control of your powers yet. I mean if I wanted to I could snap you in half.” He playfully lifted up my arm and wiggled it, wrapping his hand around my upper arm.
Miffed I started to walk faster. What a butt-head!
“Ugh!”
“Kennley, I’m sorry.” Which he was not, he was trying to hide his laughter by covering his mouth with his hand.
“I can to use my powers, I just can’t make it work on demand.” I was still fuming but I had to go along with his infectious laughter, I really did not know how to use my powers.
“I guess we have to spend more time together, I mean working on your powers.” His cheeks blushed red and he looked up ahead of us.
“We can spend all the time together as we need, just as long as I get control of my powers.”
I sobered up, with the knowledge that if I had known more about my powers I could have defeated Nicolai and saved us all. Cooper, Dixon and everyone else that I love, even Alorha, could be safe and out of harms way.
“It is all right Kennley. It is not your fault.” Marcus put his arm around my shoulders, but I shrugged them off, not liking the way my body tingled.
“It’s really not okay; Cooper and Dixon could have died because of me.”
“No not because of you, because of the Light or Nicolai or what ever his name is. You did everything you could.” He put his arm back around my shoulders except this time he would not let me shake him off.
“No I did not, if I spent more time working on my powers instead of going to the movies or shopping it wouldn’t have come down to Cooper and Dixon’s lives.”
“This is as much my fault as it is yours. I was the one who suggested the wig; in fact, I would say this is entirely my fault. I should have never suggested that, it was stupid.” He hung his head and dropped his arm from my shoulders it was heart breaking.
“Oh Marcus, it’s not your fault, its Nicolai’s fault, the Light needs to be stopped. He has been in power for far too long.” I readied myself mentally trying to harden my skin; maybe if I was stronger and not so emotional I would be able to defeat this one true threat.
It took us almost five hours to get home, by then Colby was in bed and could not ream me a new one. I walked up the grand staircase, thankful for the longer route, towards my room but once I got to the third story, I knew where I wanted to go.
Cooper was lying in bed, breathing slowly and steadily. I tiptoed up and lay next to him, wrapping my hands around his stomach. He stirred slightly but did not wake, moaning just a bit. I loved his smell and the way he felt in my arms, I wish we could lay next to each other forever but Nicolai made sure that would not ever happen.
“Cooper?” I whispered slightly in his ear, nuzzling his ear.
“Mmmm,” he rolled over and put his arm around me, tucking me closer to him, “I love waking up to you.” He mumbled out the words, I was not sure if he was awake.
“Are you awake, Cooper?” I lifted my chin so I could kiss just under his chin.
“Yes,” he looked down at me and opened his eyes, “and I’m glad that you came to see me. I was so worried about you but Alorha put me to sleep, telling me that I needed to rest.” He waved his hand in the air, shooing the invisible fly.
“Alorha was in here with you?”
“Well yeah, she was checking to make sure my leg was healed okay. She said that she had to heal me in a hurry and was not sure if she did a good job.” He was a little confused at my question and expression.
“While you were in your boxers?” I was more than a little upset at the fact that Alorha took advantage of the fact that I was gone.
“Stop that, Alorha just wanted to make sure I was okay. Nothing more, calm down. You are the only one I want in my bed,” he kissed my nose, “my arms,” he kissed my cheek, “and in my heart.” He pressed his warm, soft lips to mine. Fire burned in my heart for Cooper but something was off, something did not feel right and then in my head I saw Nicolai’s face, smiling at me, whispering sweet nothings in my head.
