Fallen Chapter NineA Story by Chistie
Chapter Nine
When Cooper and I entered the dining room all conversations stopped. I felt my face turn even redder and I could feel my muscles contract, ready to bolt from the room any second. Cooper feeling the tension in my muscles held me tighter, giving me a small squeeze, trying to calm my nerves.
A very tall woman at the head of the table stood, coming around the ten-person table to embrace me. She smelled like honey in the sun, sweet and tangy. I found the smell relaxing and I hugged the women back, which was awkward because Cooper still had his arm around my waist.
“Welcome Kennley, I am Colby. I guess you could say I am the boss. I hope you found your room in order?” She had a soothing voice, as if she was a mother speaking to her upset toddler.
“Yes, thank you. I hope I am not an inconvenience. I mean I don’t want to put any one out.” I do not know why I was being so formal but the woman in front of me just smiled.
“Don’t be ridiculous, this manor has more than enough bedrooms.” She waved her hand in the air as if shooing away a fly.
She took my hand and led me around the table, introducing me to the other people who sat at the table.
“This is Marcus, but he told me he already introduced himself to you, he will be your instructor now that you are here.”
“What do you mean instructor?” I interrupted her sentence; I did not want to believe that Marcus, the scary handsome man, was going to teach me anything. Marcus gave me a half smile and winked. Cooper’s arm tightened, hurting my side just a bit.
“He will teach you how to use your powers, now where was I, oh yes. This is Toshia and Alorha; they have the rooms next to yours.”
Toshia stood up to shake my hand when Colby said her name but I could tell she did not want to. She was very small, a head shorter than me, her hair was blonde almost white, reaching well past the middle of her back and her eyes were such a pale blue that they also looked white. Her skin was not the natural tan that Colby had but a suntan, she must not be from Jackson.
Alorha was her opposite, she had dyed black hair, and dark brown eyes, and her skin was a naturally dark skin tone. She also shook my hand with the same reluctance that Toshia had. I did not know why they would not want to shake my hand but Colby was naming another person.
So I didn’t have time to think it through.
“This is Dixon; he has a room on the second floor, if you ever need anything.”
Dixon was a middle-aged man with gray flecks in his other wise still full head of hair. He had a gentle smile on his face as he stood and shook my hand. I liked him immediately.
Moving around the head of the table where Colby had sat, she introduced a man that could have been her twin. He looked younger but the facial structure was the same.
“This is my brother, Cassidy.” Colby beamed as she introduced her brother causing him to turn red. He stood and I realized that he was a very tall man. He stood taller than even Colby, who was a head taller than I was.
“Hi,” he had the same smooth voice like his sister, but it was a bass instead of tenor.
“Hello.” I smiled at him and shook his enormous hand.
Colby moved on to the next and I was a little surprised to see that it was Albert who sat in the seat.
“You already know Albert; he is our oldest and most invaluable Star. We couldn’t replace him even if we tried.”
“How….are you dear?” Albert wheezed out his greeting as he hugged me.
“Good thank you.” I hugged him back carefully, afraid that if I hugged too tightly I might break something.
“Now if you would just have a seat next to Albert we can begin dinner.” Colby had released me and headed towards the head of the table, trailing her hand along those she passed.
I took my seat slowly, still looking at the others. I had not noticed when Colby was leading me around that there was an even amount of women to men. Four woman and four men made up the Falling Stars and all of them, including Albert, were all very good looking. They all looked like some weird realty show where everyone was beautiful, not an ugly one among them.
Cooper sat next to me, not wanting to be away from me for very long. I was glad that he stayed but I could see the tension building between him and Marcus. I would have to do something to show Cooper that no one could take me away from him.
Sylvia served us roast beef with stewed potatoes and carrots; she smiled at me when she set my plate in front of me and I smiled back to thank her.
The food was delicious! I did not know people could cook like that, the roast beef literally melted in my mouth with and explosion of flavor and juices. I finished my plate first, not wasting my time to chew; my family had never cooked meals like this. My mother usually had some date to go on and my dad was too busy getting drunk to care what we had so I was usually stuck trying to cook whatever we had in the cupboards. Not having brothers and sisters to care for made cooking easier, I did not have to make it nutritious or filling, but my parents usually expected me to make them up a plate.
After everyone was finished eating Colby stood and clapped her hands. Confused I looked at Cooper who pointed at the spot where my plate used to be.
