Would Rather Be Alone

Would Rather Be Alone

A Poem by Chris Fortune

If you ask me I would rather be alone
Than to relive the heartbreak I have known.
To be all curled up into a ball.
To be crying my eyes out with no stall.

If you ask me I would rather be alone.
Than for my life to be a living hell.
I'd rather be cooped up like a gnome.
And never step outside of my shell.

If you ask me I would rather be alone.
Than to relive the nightmare of my past.
To relive the darkness of a light that shone.
And when I was nothing but an outcast.

If you ask me I would rather be alone.
So I can keep learning more about myself.
To learn to make this house a happy home.
And take my shattered soul off the shelf.

If you ask me I would rather be alone.
So I know what it means to have a pure heart.
Not to throw it out like a dog and a bone.
But I'm on the right track and it's a sure start.

If you ask me I would rather be alone.
So I can take the time to get on one knee.
And ask the creator of everything that's known.
About the one that he has in store for me.
