A Cry For HelpA Story by Chris RankineGareth is at his lowest ebb, struggling with life, can he get the help he needs before sinking without a trace?A
Cry For Help The
thought had occurred to him before, more and more of late: How do you become
happy in life? Gareth had been down for awhile now, he was fed up feeling like
this, a feeling of not being bothered by anything, or anybody for that matter. His
social life had all but vanished, the worst part was that it did not bother him
that much. It
had started with his working life, the mere thought of going to work got him
down. His
colleagues were nice enough, he got on well with most of them. His life was in
somewhat of a rut, however, he had neither the motivation nor energy to change
things. His mood had been getting lower, his thoughts becoming darker. The one
question he struggled to answer himself was: What is the point in carrying on? He
had come to the realisation that he was suffering from some form of depression.
He had suspected it deep down for some time now, it had only been after reading
about a footballer who had spoken publicly of his struggles with depression
that he begun to realise he had to face it. More and more people were coming
out with their struggles now, it was becoming less of a taboo topic. Gareth
had learned through his own research that depression was an illness, one that
can affect people in different ways. It is not something to be ashamed or
embarrassed about, after all 1 in 10 people in the U.K suffer from a form of
depression. For
Gareth, and perhaps many others like him, the thought of having to vocalise
these feelings to people, especially family and friends was one of the main
reasons he delayed telling anybody. It turned out to be easier than he thought. The
words poured out easier than he thought, getting his feelings out in the open
was already making him feel slightly better. It was certainly a relief. Keeping
his feelings locked up inside had been a huge mistake. Gareth’s
family were understandably shocked. However, they were fully supportive of him.
The pride they had for him for the huge amount of courage he had shown
admitting this was immeasurable. Gareth
felt a large weight had been removed from his shoulders after telling his
parents. He regretted waiting this long. Together
they discussed what to do next. They spent some time researching their options.
Gareth, with the support of his family, had decided to go see his Doctor, this
seemed like the best starting point to help him get through this. He
knew whatever happened next, this would not be an easy time. There is no quick
fix. It is not something that will just sort itself out. There
is help out there. All you have to do is ask. © 2022 Chris Rankine |
