A Problem with "The."

A brief encounter with the word "The."

A pimple developed on my forehead.  I popped it. Its infection spread leaving a quarter sized scab.  At the market, the checkout clerk asked, “Wha’ happen’? Da bird bite ya?” “Yes,” I replied, “there is only one bird in the world, and we fought.” She thought about it and said, “Here’s your change. Peckerless jerk!”

“there is only one bird in the world, and we fought.”

This line makes it. Specifically the word choice of 'and we fought'. I love the humor in that, picturing you, a human, and a small bird in an epic battle. Almost like a duel. I don't know if it's helpful to point out the humor in the story but maybe it is so you know that the humor translated to your audience. Eh I don't know. Pretty good story though mate.
