Third Grade and Emmy Lou...

Third Grade and Emmy Lou...

A Poem by chuck

I still remember back in third grade, Falling in love
on Valentine’s day. Mrs. McCormick explained
the traditions of the day.
I remember it like it was yesterday.

She said, "don't be embarrassed when you like someone,
the candy and cards were just part of the fun".

So I made a card gave it to Emmy Lou.
The only words I wrote were "I love you!"
I had some chocolate from my mom that day,
so I left them on her desk and walked away.

Emmy Lou and I had become such good friends
walked her home through fields where the sidewalk ends.
We flew our kites and we played hide and seek.
On the playground she kissed me on the cheek.

When the bell rang after recess that day,
everyone was laughing at the games
we played. I watched her
eyes as she looked at her
desk then saw that smile
that I'll never forget.

Mrs. McCormick was trying to settle us down.
Then the room got quiet, there wasn't a sound
Next thing I knew there were  lips on my lips
and Emmy Lou had given me one big kiss.

Ms McCormick wasn't sure what to do next.
She came and moved me to another desk.
At first, I was angry but then I realized,
I saw the love shine in Emmy Lou's eyes.

No distance between us could tear us apart.
Those words "I love you" reached into her heart.
Now, it's twenty years later and it's Valentines Day
I bought her chocolates and a card that would say...

"I still love you!"
