FEARA Story by ChinooWhat is Fear and how one can overcome itFEAR What is Fear? Fear can mean different things to different
people. For one person it could mean something they don’t want to experience in
their lives or for some, it could mean something they always failed to do and
for some it could mean some past that they want to forget. But for me it is
something I should pursue and get rid of before it engulfs me. Oh! What a Brave
girl you might think, but it wasn’t the case long time ago until I kept thinking
about it and came to a conclusion about what exactly a fear is??? A long-time ago I used to get scared of the dark, especially
when I went to family vacations to these Hill stations where it used to be quiet
and dark at nights with only sounds of insects and hooting of nocturnal species.
I would really get scared and feared sleeping alone or without any night lights
in the room. That’s what felt as fear to me. But it was not quite the same when
I was back at home, even if the lights are off I can very well maneuver
all over the place in darkness. So, was I really scared of darkness?? Yes, that
made me think and think a lot….. There was this another fear that I experienced which was
swimming in the Ocean, or River or Ponds. But I was absolutely ok when I was in
the Swimming Pool. At first, I thought I was scared of deep water, but then I
was ok in the swimming pool which was quite deep too, so that means I wasn’t scared
of deep water instead, I was scared of unknown. When one is in a swimming pool
even if you submerge yourself completely you still can see the tiles or
anything else cause its visible (may be blur but visible), but when you are in
Ocean there’s darkness visibility is very less. So that’s when I again realized
that I am scared not of water but of invisible depths of water. I called it
fear of unknown, wait ….. isn’t it similar to the darkness fear I mentioned before??
Where I am scared of darkness in an unknown place compared to darkness in my
own house, where I am absolutely alright. So that’s when I realized that I am neither scared of
darkness nor of water but I am scared of Unknown. Things I don’t know about and
I think that’s pretty ok, so the only solution would be try to know the
unknown. Since I pursued my fears, I could actually find the reason behind my
fear and now I can take a second step in overcoming it. All I have to do is
face these fears one at a time, slowly and steadily (not in a hurry at all) and
try and overcome them. Like next time I go to an unknown place for vacations, I
would rather sit in the balcony at night and try and listen to the quietness of
the place and feel the nature rather than getting scared and hiding inside a
blanket at night or go for a scuba diving experience to actually feel what’s in
the depth of those unknown waters and how beautiful my fears could actually
turn out to be. Makes sense, isn’t it?? So, all you people out there try this at least once in your
lifetime, pursue something that you feared for a long-time and try and overcome
it. The feeling after you do that is a “ONE OF A KIND " ENLIGHTNING” and then
your fear will no more be a fear for you. Do think about it. © 2020 ChinooAuthor's Note
