Summer Family Reunion

I’m Overwhelmed

Surrounded

By all of you

It’s just too much!

You’re laughing

Talking

Farting

Coughing

Choking

There’s no room for me

Where do I fit in?

The intensity of emotions

Is too high

People aging

People dying

Babies cooing

Chicken frying

I don’t have the right job

Where are my children?

My husband never attends

I love you so much

It’s too hard to say goodbye

Seeing you makes me cry

Why do we all have to die?

Let’s all live forever

I have no control,

Losing myself

Each time one

Of you die,

Oh, how much

I secretly cry

Tables filled with

Fresh vegetables from the garden

Grilled meats and

And tasty fruit pies

Softball games in the sunny fields

Hours of swimming and playing in

The lake or hotel pool

Dancing all night at the disco

Late night pizza runs

Watermelon fighting

Fun with the seeds

The tears

The jokes

The memories

The card games

The long walks on the

Windy dirt roads

With cousins

Oh how I look forward

To these precious moments

With my family each year

Oh how I cherish

These days

We share together

As a family

I loved the family reunion I had as a kid. All would go to Grandparent house and eat/talk. They were the good days. Today we are all too busy and see each other at funerals. Which is a sad thing. I like your story in this poem. Took me to a good place in my life. Thank you for the excellent poem.

to me this sounds like an anxiety attack that is overwhelming your senses. You are on sensory overload and it is causing you distress. We sometimes feel like we won't measure up to the others in our families but you know what if people can't love you for who you are and accept you then it is time to put distance there. This is a great detailed piece that shows how chaotic the mind can be at large events like this.

What fun, and what wonderful memories you must have!

I get a sense of nostalgia, sorrow, happiness, bitterness, just a slew of emotions throughout this... Which is something that tends to happen when you're with family.
