First Chill of Autumn

First Chill of Autumn

A Poem by Marie Harrison

A frosty breath poem of fall.

First Chill of Autumn

As night grows darker,

Death’s black blanket

Slowly starts to spread

Bat wings flutter gleefully

At the edge of night

Stirring a gentle breeze

That whispers softly

To awaken the

Sleeping dead

Like the skillful prance

Of a black widow spider

Autumn is creeping

Further and further along

Soon trick o’ treat kids

Will be singing their

Candy begging songs

As I gaze upon the stars

That twinkle way above,

My shoulders feel a chill

Of Fall’s brazen display

Of love that slowly

Surrounds me

I welcome the chilled air’s

Refreshing entry into my

Restless angelic heart

The temperature drop

Restores nature's balance

Just like warm pumpkin pie

Cooling on my hearth.

Very nice! Great flow, and rhythm. Definitely highlights the best of the season - trick o' treat kids singing their candy begging songs...brilliant, and my fav part.

I liked the Pumpkin pie. Its warm, cozy and comforting. Its a staple in the
seasonal traditions of fall. I thought about how pumpkin pie is loose and
lifelike...then the cool air transforms it into a motionless mass...almost as
if Rigor Mortis had set in. It did in some ways symbolize the loss of vibrant
color in the scenery, but still retaining beauty and profound energy.

I think that the it's relevant to the theme of collecting the sights and sounds
that are and/or welcome fall. Overall, this poem puts a cheerful spotlight on
the changeover of seasons. It was nice work, Sweet Marie!

I understand the pumpkin pie is a pleasant element of warmth, but I wonder why it's there, since it is not really a restoration of nature's balance, unless it stays fresh for another three months. I think that since the rest of the poem is about autumn--the death of nature before encroaching winter--you should just leave everything chilly and discard the warmth...but that's just me. Nice job...
