I’d Rather Remember Christmas In July

Because we cannot rely that

you’ll be alive beyond July,

this year let’s have Christmas

in Hawaii and in the month of July.

What a high that will be to scuba

with Santa and ride waves

that seem  a mile wide.

Let’s kiss under the mistletoe,

Not in the snow drinking a cup of Joe,

But on the Hawaiian pier watching the undertow

Wearing our bikinis, swim trunks and flip flops,

Instead of our worn out matching house robes.

This year instead of presents,

Let’s give each other flowered leighs,

And besides watching for Santa’s sleigh,

We’ll scout for him hanging ten on a huge wave.

Usually a yuletide carol is sweet in December,

But won’t it be bitter sweet

when we look back and remember

Don Ho strumming his Hawaiian

Christmas songs under a beach cabana

Where everyone’s legs are long, tan and limber?

It’s spending Christmas with you

in Hawaii in July that I would rather remember

When you’re gone in December.

The contrast between hot and cold, tradition and not is great and reminds us we don't need to do the norm, life is for taking and enjoying.........great imagary, and a real uplifting emotion of happiness and opportunity!

That's awesome. I wrote a poem "Christmas In July"
my own version, of course. Similiar, spending a joyous
evening with my lover in July, seeming like Christmas in December.
Also reminds me of being in the mountains in July at my grandma's camp.
They had Christmas every July. Hawaii would be grand!!

While on my summer trips this is a topic that i have run across in conversation quite a few time. Up here in New England they love Christmas so Christmas in July is pretty big. I had though of it as a marketing trick that had caught popular practice, but your poem has made me rethink my previous stand on the subject. Now there is the variable of time, the limit of humanity which sometimes cancels the procession of seasons. Thank you for changing my mind.
