Bell Jar State
A Poem by Marie Harrison
A poem about depression.
Bell Jar State
Year after year,
Day after day,
I walk around
In my numb
Bell jar state.
I’m ready for
My alteration,
My final break
Out of this
Dismal space.
It’s my life to have
Or to take.
Staying in the
Depressing state
Would
Be my own
Damn mistake.

I recently read Sylvia Plath's book The Bell Jar. This poem was inspired by her book. I think I've been in my own bell jar since my divorce. I'm coming out of it, but I related to what she described, to feeling numb for years and days, to the insomnia and the inability to eat, write or think. It is very difficult to function when you are in this type of state.

Been in this state once or four times ...
I like this poem. It's well crafted, the flow is smooth sailing
to the tongue and it's expressive in emotion.
Well done! I like the last line!
