Binary

Binary

A Poem by Autumn Alvira
"

my take on what its like to be non-binary. to not be male or female. to be separate.

"
Once long ago
I would never if thought
Filling out a survey
Would be so hurtful
Simple questions
Name
Age
Gender
Gender
Boy girl
Check box that applies
Never use a restroom
Never in public
Boys room
Girls room
Are you in the wrong room?
Even buying things is full of false titles
Sir
Ma'am
Mister
Miss
Nothing ever fits
I'm always stuck
Put in a box
Put in this binary
100010101110101
2 numbers
2choices
100101100111001
Neither number fits
I don't fit
100101011001013...3
I am another number
I am not ones and zeros
I am my own gender
My own number
My own box
In my head I draw a box
Label it "both"
Boy
Girl
Check box that applies
On paper I check girl
But in my head I check both.
