Article.1A Story by Thomas ChennankaraIf you could be anyone you desire for a day, who would you choose to be?! You want to be someone else; If only you could feel beautiful; If only you could be perfect; If only you could lay in your bed and feel like you are on top of the world; To just know what life is like without the burdens and flaws of being yourself; At least for a day if you could be- you wish every single night for your life. This very thought of leaving your life behind and living a day in someone else’s shoes has always fascinated me. How would things differ? How is it, to be someone else? Would it give you everything you have ever desired for? Would it take you to heights of happiness you would never reach by being yourself? Your whole life has been a mystery of putting a question tag at the end of every statement you made and your curiosity has known no limits. So, given the chance who would you choose to be? “Who would I be?” you keep asking this to yourself a million times. Because it happens to be the hardest part of this game. As a child, times when you were so carefree and you had nothing to worry about in this selfish big round world- you have always wanted to be a superhero who could fly around and save the world from the dirty villains just in time. As you grew older that innocence you had as a child was lost forever. Terms like “money”, “fame” all started clouding your mind. You still remember the days when you kept day dreaming about spending a day as a millionaire, and the luxurious ways in which you would splurge on things. Time flew by and you entered adolescence. Those were times when you wished if you could live a day in your parents’ shoes, just so you can understand what was going on in your father’s head. To realize how he could compromise his family to feed his ego and to gain out of it. One single day in your parents’ shoes to know how it is for your mother to love you unconditionally, irrespective of the spoilt brat you had turned into. Just one single time- you wished. They say, “Someday, someone is going to look at you like you are the best thing in the world.” When that feeling gets on your nerves you have a sudden rush of blood from your brains to your heart. You believe it is time for you to love and be loved. But when that turns out be nothing like you ever expected it to be, you would go through those desperate loops of time when you wished if you could live a day in your girlfriend’s mind and play her role, just so you can figure out what went wrong. To find out if you were ever good enough for her. To understand if cheating on you was the best decision she has ever taken in her life. Then again, on a personal note my friend, I bet, you would have spent a hundred days in her head and still wouldn’t be able to even figure out why she prefers black to blue. Because women will always be women; complicated as ever! So back to where we were- who would you be? Given a million options just like these, who would you choose to be? Ask me the same and I would say “myself” without a second thought. Let it be any time of the year or any phase of life, and I will still choose to be myself from the whole lot. I might be in a void of love and light. Trapped in rooms without locks, hearts closed, mind-numb and refusing to pursue hope. But I do realize that the key to my freedom is within me. All the troubled times, all the nasty phases in my life were just lessons and very well these were hard lessons but never could they kill me. They may have screwed me up, but eventually, they have only made me stronger. Every tiny little experience have I gained has made me smarter and bolder. I believe I am a work in progress being prepared to face my own life, gifted by my creator here and after. Yes! Given a chance to be anyone, let it be for a day or a lifetime- it doesn’t matter. I would choose to be myself because someone once said, “be the man you were created to be and you would set the world on fire.” Oh yes, the flames I would love!! Thomas Chennankara
