The Captain and The Sea

The Captain and The Sea

A Poem by E.C.F. Doyle
"

Words.

"

I lay upon the dark night screaming,
Harrowed dreaming,
Searching for some wisdom wise,

And looking to the morning asking;
What is lasting
Viewed through these haggard eyes?

There is fear to love,
And love to fear.
Great emptiness,
Empty greatness.
_____________

Drift upon that ocean sailing,
Winds ‘a wailing,
Searching for some land to see.

Lay him down, the captain, dying,
Crewmen crying,
Wonder what it was to be.

There is fashion to life
And life to fashion.
Sensible futility,
Futile sensibility.
______________

Rap upon that door and wonder,
Endless ponder,
“Will this fellow answer me?”

The ferryman he answers slowly,
Waiting coldly.
“I wonder does he wait for me?”

I like your style here. I especially love your
use of juxtaposition. You must be a clever
fellow. I am new to your work. So far, I'm
liking it.

This was very well thought out and put together beautifully. Great work, thanks for sharing, looking forward to the writings in the future.

Very well constructed and I thought the switch on the words that changed their meaning was excellent.
I never like to just assume that my perceptions of a read are correct. From this I got a fear of death, questioning, time ticking and eventually coming to terms that it would inevitably come.

Very well written piece. :)

Beautifully haunting. This piece has the right blend of fear and amazement. And a very strong closing line that "rings" and "resounds" like an echo after I'm done reading. Can't wait to read more of your work!

A truly great poem. I am not the fondest of rhyming poems but when they work they can be tremendous. Definitely felt the flow of Poe here and yet you added your own flavor to it. Dickinson as well.... very nicely done poem!

I was blown away by this bit of writing. I've been rereading Poe and Dickens lately and have tried to structure some of my poetry in a way similar to the style of the stories and poetry of these two gentlemen. I find it to be a lot of fun. You have put my mere efforts to shame with this exceptional write and It's easy to see why you get so many hits and reviews. I really like the archaic and very poetic style of this write and it's only the first that I've read so far. One of the first things I do upon getting a friend request is to read a sample of the persons poetry. (Honestly, most of them I just ignore after reading them) I'm definitely going to accept you as a friend on this site. You work is first rate! Excellent!

A very interesting poem, quite unique in fact in the way you juxtapose words, reversing meanings. I think there should be a comma after 'wonder' in the final verse, to slow that final question.

a great syncopated beat and an interesting structure. I notice that the last section has a missing stanza that might tell us what the ferryman answers.
