Chapter 1
Science or Basketball
Dallen always had his way with
skipping science class, he wasn't a big fan of dissecting frogs, learning about
strange body parts, and diseases. Instead of going to class he went
outside to play basketball with the ninth graders. Dallen was in 8th grade but tall
enough that he looked like a ninth grade or tenth grader. "Hey Dall, get over here. We
need a big man." Trevor called to Dallen. "Alright." Dallen said
happy to be playing. "4 on 4, me, Dall, Nate, and
Even is on my team." I nodded and
the other guys seemed to be nervous but eventually there main point guard for
the other team said, "Sure, let's go." The team was shorter but but had
better 3'pointers and more speed. Our team had more height and more
re-bounders. This was going to be a good game. Dallen walked up for the tip off. He
was about 6'1, tallest guy for his team. The other team's point guard said,
"Okay Chad you got this." Chad was 5'10 and he was the tallest
for his team also. He was scrawny and skinny. He walked up for the tip off and
Dallen couldn't help not to smile. They touched the ball, and then it
was thrown into the air, Dallen jumped and tipped the ball back to his team. Trev caught the ball and started
dribbling towards the hoop, he was intercepted by the other team's forward Mark
Jones. Dallen was at the hoop trying to get
Trevor's attention. Trev saw him and passed. Dall jumped and caught the ball,
shot and banked a layup, "2 to
0," Dallen said smiling. * After the game school was over and
Dallen had to walk home from school because his parents were at work. His mom was a nurse at the Saint
Jame's Hospital, and his father was a car mechanic. Dallen was feeling good because he
won the game, "52 to 46, what a game!" Dallen said to himself. After grabbing his things from his
locker it was time for him to head home. He picked up his things and walked
out of the middle school passing kids he knew and trying to avoid teachers. It was a cloudy day for Texas,
lately during the school year the weather had been scorching hot. But today it
seemed like just a warm, not that burning, hot, sweaty feeling. Dallen had noticed and looked up at
the sky and said, "There's clouds today... I don't remember the last time
I saw one of those." Dall continued on his way enjoying
every moment of walking home. He lived quite far from the school
and it usually took him about 30 to 40 minutes to walk home. He was in a good mood because of the
weather and also because he won the basketball game. But that was all going to end... Just then a black van drove towards
Dallen. Dallen didn't seem to notice and kept on walking. The van drove next to Dallen and the
driver rolled down his window, "Hey kid come over here, can you uh... give
me some directions?" Dallen nodded and walked over to the
van. "Where to?" He asked the two men. "Do you know how to get to the
Hillson's house? We have an uh... package to deliver." The driver said. "My last name is Hillson. Are
you looking for Troyet Hillson? That's my father." Dallen asked the men. The two men looked back at each
other for a split second then the man in passenger seat got out of the car. He was huge, 6'7 and all muscle. He grabbed Dallen and Dallen yelled,
"What are you doing!? Let go of
me!" Dallen kicked and flailed but it was
no use. The man put a meaty hand over
Dallen's mouth so he couldn't scream. He Lifted Dallen into the van and
threw him into the back of the van. Dallen hit his head against the wall and
collapsed into darkness. The kidnappers had their
ransom. © 2015 C. Lee BattagliaAuthor's Note
