ADVISOR THAT IS TERRIFIED OF SNAKES

Old man James is known for giving good advice on life, but he has one little quirk, he is terrified of snakes.

Let say you are having financial difficulties, and you ask James for advice, he would sit you down at his kitchen table and tell you one of his favorite sayings, which is, "It is better to have and not need, then to need and not have."

This old saying goes along way.

He is an eighty year old man that is slendor, humble voiced, tall. He was born in Bayton, Missouri, he has two brothers and three sisters(which are deceased now).

He never missed going to sunday school, he sits on the Deacon board of the church. He loves to listen to his spirituals on his old motorola record player, his favorite

gospel music artist is MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY.  He loves to lie in his bed and watch western movies on t.v. and when a snake appears on the tube, this man would either jump out of bed, or pull the covers over his head and yell as loud as he can.

His family knows about his quirk, but his company might not know and they wonder when they hear him if he's alright.

Now, one day I went over to his house to visit his wife, and he was upstairs in the bed, all of a sudden this man comes flying down stairs with a blanket over his head, saying there's a snake in the house. His wife and I just laughed because we know he just saw one on t.v.

James dresses very fashionably. His suits are nicely cleaned and pressed(which his wife makes sure of). But Mon-Sat. he wears old clothes that don't match. I guess that's alright around the house. He loves to sit at the kitchen table and read his bible( which he does daily).

James countinues to give his warm and bibical advice to the young and old.(Especially the young).

He also says," A man that blames everyone hasn't begun his education, A man that blames himself begun his education, A man that blames no one finished his education.

A very deep piece, somewhat reminds me of a Flannery O'Connor fable, which is a good thing. Alice Walker learned everything she knows for Flannery O'Connor as did most contemporary short-story writers. If I were you, i'd develop this piece a little deeper, it has great potential. Moreover, it needs more layers and deeper character development. The protagonist reminded me somewhat of my grandfather, minus the snake phobia.

This is a really nice read. I love how you throw out these seemingly-random descriptors (his fear of snakes, his Sunday attire) that wind up painting this really compelling picture of a man - one the reader can't help but wish she could meet. And then, when you include his wisdom at the end...It really drives that point home, because we feel we are hearing it from someone we almost know.

Thanks so much for sharing this!

A outstanding story. I like the complete story. You create a strong character in your words. His last lines on education is true. We must seek goal and accomplish them. We are responsible for our education and our life. A very good story. Thank you.

There are pople who are purposely bitten by snakes and drink gasoline to prove their faith in the lord. Sounds like james wouldn't be a good candidate for the snake part. haha. Nice story Charlotte.
